Behind the Aghavea church, located between Armstrong & Rusk headstones is a worn flat stone covered with lechin that marks the burial place of my great uncle John McGirr The inscription reads: " To the Memory of John McGirr died 24th March 1891 Aged 32 " While my brother was visiting Aghavea in the early 1980s, an elderly relative told him of the unmarked graves of John's brother James McGIRR and his wife Elizabeth ( RIELY ) and his parents at rest to the right and left of the flatstone, respectively. From John's death certificate I then found the names our great great grand parents Michael McGirr and Anne ( MORRISON ) and verified with parish records.

This stone was erected by Rev. John Gunne and Capt Robert Gunne both of Canda West in memory of their father Micaheal Gunne Late of Lislea d. 3 Feb 1845 a. 59 also their mother Sarah Gunn d. 20 Jan 1848 a. 63 yrs also Samuel Johnston son of Josiah Johnson ofAnagrane and cousin of the above mentioned departed this life in Dublin 12th 1896 a. 21 William Johnston d. Underneath this tomb are the remains of James Hall son of Wm Hall and his daughter 1821. HAZLETT IRVINE HAZLETT in loving memory of his mother Jane who died 20th Nov 1897 aged 76 Not dead, but sleeping Also his wife Sarah did 4th April 1915 aged 54 Safe in the arms of Jesus Irvine Hazlett died 13th August 1927 aged 74 years Note: Irvine & Sarah were from the townland Killykeeran, Aghavea Parish - source 1901 Co. He loved liberty and hated oppression; he served his day and generation by espousing the cause of the weak in the press, on the platform, and on the public boards of his native country which he served without stint, on the Magisterial Bench, and for almost 25 years in Parliament. By birth and conviction he was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, on whose altar during a long life he laid much fruitful service. "After Life's Fitful Fever He Sleeps Well."
