Co. Offaly, in the heart of Ireland, is full of hidden scientific and cultural treasures. Once the world's largest telescope (photo to left), it is situated at the Birr Castle where it was built by the third Earl of Rosse in the 1840s, who was also the father inventor of the steamship turbine engine notable for powering ships such as the Queen Elizabeth in the first half of the 20th century.
