IRELAND: Decorative original antique map Arbuckle. 1889
The single most important item of information for family history research is a precise place of origin. In Ireland, a place name is not only descriptive of the area but often a clue as to whether the settlers were Gales, English or Vikings by which language was used to name the place. As new towns were founded after English had become the main language, it follows that many were given English names. With Anglicization some of the old place names were mistranslated and so to the dismay of a researcher it would first appear as though a place never existed!
