Click here for sample school record : 1893 for John McGIRR age 11 classmates: John JONES , Joshua Herbert RUSK , Joseph MULLHOLLAND , Frank Jones. (teacher Mrs. MAZE , roll = 20 male students) My grandfather, Charles, started school in 1901 at six years old recorded from infant. His classmates were: Thomas ARMSTRONG (6), Thomas Mc CAULEY (6), Willie GRAYDON (5), Lewis COPELAND (8) and Joseph BOWES (6). The record shows him as being out of school in the year 1907, the same year that his brother William (23) died of Phythisis ( death cert signed by C. T. Taylor registrar ). Phythisis is a very old European medical term for consumption, white lung disease or tuberculosis. My grandfather returned to school the following year and was stricken from the record in 1909 (last year of attendance). He would later use his bookkeeping skills while working as a clerk for the Rail Way Express in Chicago, Illinois. (Source: US Census records 1920).
